So the Oscar nominations were published some hours ago, and in this post, I´m going to briefly say what I think is going to happen on the 10th of February and what I think of the nominations.
I´m only going to talk about the awards regarding live-action movies, not animated movies or documentaries (cause I haven´t watched any of them), and also the main categories, I´m not going to comment on clothing, visual effects or makeup cause I have 0 knowledge on that subjects.
Best Picture:
“Ford v Ferrari” “The Irishman” “Jojo Rabbit” “Joker” “Little Women” “Marriage Story” “1917” “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” “Parasite”
I agree with all these nominations (even though I haven´t watched Ford vs Ferrari, Jojo Rabbit, and Parasite yet), the most popular movie and the one that most people think is going to win is obviously Joker, but I think that Once Upon a Time in Hollywood is going to be the winner, Joker is not going to win the best picture (It´s a great movie but doesn´t deserve this award). Tarantino has never won the best picture so it´s going to be a big moment for movie history.
Lead Actor:
Antonio Banderas, “Pain and Glory” Leonardo DiCaprio, “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” Adam Driver, “Marriage Story” Joaquin Phoenix, “Joker” Jonathan Pryce, “The Two Popes”
Even though Antonio Banderas was brilliant in "Pain and Glory" and is one of the best actors in the world, I´d love Adam Driver to win this award, and I think that he is the one that deserves it the most. His performance in "Marriage Story" was so accurate and devastating that I consider it the best acting of the year (both male and female). But, Adam Driver is not going to be the winner, we all know who is going to be, Joaquin Phoenix.
Lead Actress:
Cynthia Erivo, “Harriet” Scarlett Johansson, “Marriage Story” Saoirse Ronan, “Little Women” Charlize Theron, “Bombshell” Renee Zellweger, “Judy”
I´m so mad at the fact that Florence Pugh is not nominated for this award for her performance in "Midsommar" but is not a surprise that the academy doesn´t nominate an A24 movie. Both Scarlett and Saoirse are my favorites for this award but most of the critics agree that Renee is going to be the one taking home this award, I haven´t watched "Judy" yet has it hasn´t been released in Spain but I´m really looking forward to it.
I´m also mad at the fact that Awkwafina is not nominated for this award, her performance in "The Farewell" is definitely Oscar worth it.
Supporting Actor:
Tom Hanks, “A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood” Anthony Hopkins, “The Two Popes” Al Pacino, “The Irishman” Joe Pesci, “The Irishman” Brad Pitt, “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood”
Brad Pitt won this award on the Golden Globes and I think that he should also win it here, there´s no excuse. Al Pacino and Pesci were good on "The Irishman" but I think Brad Pitt did much better and entertaining work.
Supporting Actress:
Kathy Bates, “Richard Jewell” Laura Dern, “Marriage Story” Scarlett Johansson, “Jojo Rabbit” Florence Pugh, “Little Women” Margot Robbie, “Bombshell”
As happens with Brad Pitt, Laura Dern won the Golden Globe on this same nomination, and I think that she should also win this award as her performance in "Marriage Story" was so good.
Director:
Martin Scorsese, “The Irishman” Todd Phillips, “Joker” Sam Mendes, “1917” Quentin Tarantino, “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” Bong Joon Ho, “Parasite”
I really believe that Tarantino is going to win this award, and he is the one that deserves it the most, being the best director alive and having won only one Oscars, and not for directing. Sam Mendes could also win, but I think that Tarantino is going to be the winner.
Adapted Screenplay:
“The Irishman,” Steven Zaillian “Jojo Rabbit,” Taika Waititi “Joker,” Todd Phillips, Scott Silver “Little Women,” Greta Gerwig “The Two Popes,” Anthony McCarten
Greta Gerwig should definitely win this award as she did such a good job with adapting a classic novel that has been adapted several times but making slight changes in the plot which made the movie pretty entertaining and good.
Original Screenplay:
“Knives Out,” Rian Johnson “Marriage Story,” Noah Baumbach “1917,” Sam Mendes and Krysty Wilson-Cairns “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood,” Quentin Tarantino “Parasite,” Bong Joon-ho, Jin Won Han
Either Rian Johnson or Tarantino are winning this award, I personally prefer Tarantino but Knive´s Out screenplay was also really good.
Cinematography:
“The Irishman,” Rodrigo Prieto “Joker,” Lawrence Sher “The Lighthouse,” Jarin Blaschke “1917,” Roger Deakins “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood,” Robert Richardson
I´d love The Lighthouse to win this award but I think either "Joker" or "1917" are going to be the winner, they both have stunning cinematography but "The Lighthouse" is superior.
Best International Feature Film:
“Corpus Christi,” Jan Komasa “Honeyland,” Tamara Kotevska, Ljubo Stefanov “Les Miserables,” Ladj Ly “Pain and Glory,” Pedro Almodovar “Parasite,” Bong Joon Ho
"Pain and glory" is the one that I´d like to win, but the winner is going to be for sure "Parasite".
Film Editing:
“Ford v Ferrari,” Michael McCusker, Andrew Buckland “The Irishman,” Thelma Schoonmaker “Jojo Rabbit,” Tom Eagles “Joker,” Jeff Groth “Parasite,” Jinmo Yang
I think that "Joker" is probably the one of these movies the one that has best film editing, "The Lighthouse" should have been nominated.
Sound Editing:
“Ford v Ferrari,” Don Sylvester “Joker,” Alan Robert Murray “1917,” Oliver Tarney, Rachel Tate “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood,” Wylie Stateman “Star Wars: The Rise of SkyWalker,” Matthew Wood, David Acord
Even though I´m a huge fan of Star Wars and the music was so nostalgic and emotional, "1917" sound editing is really good and could be even compared with "Dunkirk", one of the many Nolan´s masterpiece which is about WW2 and has one of the best scores in a movie ever.
Sound Mixing:
“Ad Astra” “Ford v Ferrari” “Joker” “1917” “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood”
Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. I have no doubt this movie is going to win this award.
Production Design:
“The Irishman,” Bob Shaw and Regina Graves “Jojo Rabbit,” Ra Vincent and Nora Sopkova “1917,” Dennis Gassner and Lee Sandales “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood,” Barbara Ling and Nancy Haigh “Parasite,” Lee Ha-Jun and Cho Won Woo, Han Ga Ram, and Cho Hee
It´s either "The Irishman" or "Once Upon a Time in Hollywood".
Original Score:
“Joker,” Hildur Guðnadóttir “Little Women,” Alexandre Desplat “Marriage Story,” Randy Newman “1917,” Thomas Newman “Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker,” John Williams
"1917" for sure.
Original Song:
“I Can’t Let You Throw Yourself Away,” “Toy Story 4” “I’m Gonna Love Me Again,” “Rocketman” “I’m Standing With You,” “Breakthrough” “Into the Unknown,” “Frozen 2” “Stand Up,” “Harriet”
As happened in the Golden Globes, I really think “I’m Gonna Love Me Again" is going to win this award.
