Once Upon a Time in Hollywood stars Brad Pitt and Leonardo DiCaprio and is directed by Quentin Tarantino, what else could I ask for?
The movie was released in mid-August and people have been talking about it since then. I have to start this review by saying that I can´t find any negative aspect of the movie, so this review is basically me praising Tarantino and the whole movie.
Once Upon a Time in Hollywood is about an actor, Rick Dalton, played by the always brilliant Leonardo DiCaprio, who is struggling to get back to the fame he had some years ago. In recent years he has started to lose a lot of recognition and fame and he doesn´t like that.
The movie is set in the LA of 1969 and one of the best things in the movie is definitely the settings of the movie. The movie creates a really realistic and cool atmosphere that makes me feel like I´m in the 60s walking down Hollywood boulevard while listening to Mrs. Robinson by Simon and Garfunkel.
Another very good thing that the movie has is, as always, the music. Tarantino´s music choices in movies are always the best they could be, and in this movie, every scene of Cliff Booth, Brad Pitt, listening to music on his car´s radio while driving in LA are just some of the best musical scenes I´ve ever seen. Another pretty remarkable aspect of the movie is the cinematography, which is really stunning.
The cast of this movie is probably one of the best casts ever in a movie. DiCaprio and Pitt together are dynamite and both of them are probably the best duo of the year, maybe even the decade! Also, Margot Robbie as Sharon Tate was really good and accurate, as well as Al Pacino, as Rick Dalton´s producer, and the members of the Manson family, especially Austin Butler, as Tex, and Margaret Qualley as Pussycat.
The script and the directing, as always happens with Tarantino, is amazing. The movie lasts almost 3 hours and doesn´t get stuck or boring at any time. All the scenes are entertaining and relevant to the story, none of them feels unnecessary or boring. Another very positive aspect of the script is the comedy, the movie has really funny moments, especially the end scene (which had me laughing the whole time).
Many people said this movie didn´t felt like a Tarantino movie because of the lack of violence and blood in the movie, as all his movies are known for being really violent. I think that the movie had as much violence as the plot allowed, the whole story of Rick Dalton and his acting career (which is the main plot, not the Manson family murders) is not really a story in which you can include violent scenes which actually make sense and don´t feel forced. There are two scenes which are violent, especially the end scene, which is probably the best scene in the whole movie, that is pretty violent, I think.
So, if you haven´t watched Once Upon a Time in Hollywood watch it as soon as you can, cause Goddamn, it´s a pretty fuckin´good movie! (as Vincent Vega would say)
10/10
