Taika Waititi´s new film about a 10-year-old Nazi boy who has as an imaginary friend Hitler has been quite popular and has been nominated for many awards including the Best Picture Oscar, and has won the Bafta of the best-adapted screenplay.

I had quite high expectations of this movie as it seemed to be a really refreshing and funny satire about Nazis, and the first half of the movie was indeed pretty refreshing and funny, but the other half was a big mess. The movie starts with some really funny and entertaining scenes just taunting and making fun of how stupid Nazism is with some hilarious performances by Rebel Wilson and Sam Rockwell, and also Archie Yates, who played Jojo´s 2nd best friend (the 1st is Hitler). Then the plot starts to develop and new characters appear and at first, it´s okay and it doesn´t seem forced but as the movie goes on and on it feels like most of the scenes are just there to fill in and make a movie, it feels like Waititi lost inspiration at some point, at least for me.

As I´ve just said the movie is not really good due to the second half of the movie emptiness but it has some pretty good aspects. First, as I´ve briefly mentioned before, the movie has some really good performances, Waititi as Hitler is really funny, and also Scarlett is good as always, even though her character was pretty flat. Also, Roman Griffin Davis who plays Jojo makes a really good job with his performance. The music in the movie was also really good, especially in the end scene (even though the end was kind of bland and felt like a (bad) copy of Life is beautiful). Another thing to highlight is the great job Waititi did by making a movie just making fun of how dumb it is to make assumptions about people or races just because of what someone tells you.

The movie is not bad, but I don´t think it deserves an Oscar Nomination (not even Scarlett Johansson), and definitely doesn´t deserve the Bafta to the best adapted screenplay. Even though it´s not nomination worth it (in my opinion) I think the movie is enjoyable (most of the time) and deserves a watch!

6/10
